Box Office Battle: “Inside Out 2” wins weekend with huge $155M opening

Disney’s (DIS) “Inside Out 2” won the weekend at the domestic box office with an historic $155M, well ahead of the expected $90M and making it the second-biggest animated launch of all time for a three-day weekend. Overseas, the Pixar movie earned $140M for a global cume of $295M, the biggest debut of all time for an animated movie. “Inside Out 2” sports a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 93% and audience score of 96%, and has earned an A CinemaScore.

BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Sony’s (SONY) “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” placed number 2 with another $33M as it cleared the $100M mark domestically and $200M worldwide. Behind it was 20th Century and Disney “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” with $5.2M as it approaches the $400M mark. “The Garfield Movie,” another Sony title, placed number 4 with $5M for a domestic tally of $78.5M. Rounding out the top five, John Krasinski and Paramount’s (PARA) “IF” grossed an estimated $3.7M.
